FEATURE: Credit Card Verification Throttle
To help strengthen security measures, we have implemented a credit card verification throttle. This applies to all clients integrated with CardPointe who require credit card verification—whether that is on the first bid only or on every bid.
With this update, if a bidder attempts to enter a credit card for verification and fails TWO times (for example, due to an incorrect CVV, an incorrect expiration/card #, a mismatch between the postal code address on their bidder profile and the address on file with their bank (IE Allen Olson), etc.), they will receive the following error message:
“Card validation failed: Throttled, please wait 1 minute and retry.”

The bidder will continue to see this message until the credit card information is entered correctly.
If a bidder calls asking what this message means, navigate to the appropriate client’s CardPointe page. From there, select the Reporting tab and click on the applicable bidder’s transaction ID from the Transactions tab. Scroll down to view the details explaining why the card was declined. For example, the decline may indicate that the CVV was entered incorrectly.

Although the throttle only requires a one-minute wait before retrying, if a bidder contacts you and would like to attempt their card again before the minute has passed, you can manually remove the restriction. To do this, navigate to the bidder’s profile. In the upper right-hand corner under "Billing Payment Card", you will see a notice that says “Validation throttled [insert date].” Below that, click the blue hyperlink labeled “Remove throttling.” This will bypass the one-minute wait period and allow the bidder to retry their card immediately.
***IMPORTANT NOTE***
After the third failed attempt to enter credit card information for verification, the bidder will be throttled for 6 hours — not 1 minute.
Although the error message will continue to display:
“Card validation failed: Throttled, please wait 1 minute and retry.”
there is an actual 6-hour lockout period that begins after the third failed attempt. During this time, the bidder will not be able to retry their card, even if they wait longer than one minute.
If a bidder calls in confused because they waited one minute and are still unable to re-enter their credit card information, simply follow the same steps outlined above to review the decline details and, if appropriate, remove the throttling from the bidder’s profile.
We currently have a ticket submitted (DEV-1535) to update the error message language after the third failed attempt so that it accurately reflects the 6-hour throttling period. We will notify everyone once this messaging has been updated.
